Description
Classic Pinot Noir Rosé 2022
2022 was a truly brilliant year in England. Coming after two terrible years (2020 had Spring frost and 2021 was a very high disease year) it was a relief to have a great spring, no frost and a great summer with healthy, ripe and plentiful crops.
The grapes for this wine is mostly from the Pinot Noir Clone 828 in the Hunt block. We picked on October 3rd which was nice and early. The wines were separately fermented and blended in the early spring 2023 and laid down for secondary fermentation on June 4th. We left the wines on lees for 18 months before disgorging in January 2025. This lees ageing was chosen to retain the fruit.
This wine is a very pale rosé with a wonderful raspberry aroma on the nose. It is smooth and balanced with a long aftertaste of tangy soft fruit. Dosage 1 gr/L so very dry.
VINTAGE INFORMATION: Grape varieties: Pinot Noir (100%) – Alcohol (ABV): 12.5% – Dosage: 1 g/l – Closure: Diam – pH: 3.43 – TA: 5.8 g/l – SO2: 79 mg/l
Rosé 2023
The weather was a rollercoaster in 2023, spring started out mild and frost free, with a lot of rain in March. Summer brought some sun along with a warmer than usual September but a rather wet July and August. Autumn was kind enough to offer a bountiful harvest and the late summer temperatures helped produce a good level of ripeness for our still wines.
The Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes for this wine were picked on 2nd and 11th October 2023. We whole bunch pressed some batches for the clean and linear approach which Oxney is known for – while also crushing and destemming some pressload to generate the light pink colour.
An invitingly pale pink rosé with clear hints of strawberries. This is a rosé for grown ups – great mouthfeel and a multitude of flavours – strawberry, cranberry and a backbone of citrus.
VINTAGE INFORMATION: Grape varieties: Pinot Noir (64%) Pinot Meunier (36%) – Alcohol (ABV): 11% – Closure: Diam cork
Estate NV Rosé
All grapes are picked by hand and transported to our winery next to the vineyard. Each parcel is whole bunch pressed and fermented separately with all the wines also going through malolactic fermentation (MLF). The Estate blend is a blend of different parcels across the estate, combined with reserve wines aged in both tank and Burgundy barrels to create a consistent NV style. After blending the Estate is bottled for secondary fermentation, after which it is aged on lees, and finally spent three months on cork prior to release. The dosage added is 2.8g/l.
Beautiful pale rosé, with delicate flavours of wild strawberry, redcurrant and red apple. Enjoy as an aperitif or with shellfish, fish or chicken dishes.
VINTAGE INFORMATION: Grape varieties: Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier – Alcohol (ABV): 11% – Dosage: 2.8g/l – TA: 6.4g/l – pH: 3.34 – SO2 total: 46mg/l – Closure: Diam cork
Producer
The vineyard at Oxney Organic Estate is located in the south east corner of East Sussex, in Beckley, six miles north of Rye. The area is becoming a new wine region with several vineyards planted along the old Rother river delta. The vineyard is part of the founders’ – Kristin Syltevik and Paul Dobson – vision of modern farming that’s environmentally sound, natural and sustainable. The estate is organic and certified by the Soil Association. The winery is located in an old converted grade II listed oast house.
The organic system at Oxney – under vine tillage for weed control and a natural approach to disease control – produces healthy, balanced and natural fruit. This approach is replicated in the winery where the organic low intervention regime is focused around small batch winemaking where each variety and clone is pressed and fermented separately, followed by careful blending decisions.
Vineyard
The first vines were planted in 2012. With the latest planting in May 2018, Oxney is the largest single estate organic vineyard in the UK with a planted area of just under 14 hectares. The vineyard, 17 meters above sea level and six miles from the English Channel, surrounds the winery and from a south-west slope stretches out towards a wood with giant oak trees, creating a warm and protected microclimate. The top soil is Tunbridge Wells Sand, a fine sand and silt loam, above clay. The vines are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc.
