Description
VINTAGE
2020 was a year of many parts – an incredibly warm early spring (which many will recall as it was lockdown due to the Covid pandemic) was followed by a spring frost in May which partially impacted the vineyard. The rest of the summer and early autumn was fabulous for growing grapes and the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in this classic blend reached excellent ripeness.
WINEMAKING
The Pinot Noir was picked from several sections across the original three blocks planted between 2012 and 2014 – the ‘new’ 2018 blocks were not yet carrying fruit. The Chardonnay for this wine was picked on October 7th, in the Dobson Block, clones 75 and 95. All the clones were fermented separately, some of the Chardonnay on oak (8% of the total blend). Partial MLF. Blended in the early spring in 2021 and laid down for secondary fermentation. The wine was left on lees for five years until disgorging in spring 2026. 2 gr/L dosage in our solera liquor which we started in 2018 for our Classic range.
TASTING NOTE
We are excited to have extended our lees ageing to five years – an ambition we have worked towards! As a result, we have noticeable autolytic overtones, brioche, toast – even digestive biscuits. On the palate we have red apple and a backbone of a typical English citrus. On the nose some oak from the barrel fermentation. Small bubbles and a generous mousse.

Producer
Six miles north of Rye, in the village of Beckley in the south east corner of East Sussex, Oxney Organic Estate has been producing award-winning organic wines since 2014. The first vines were planted in 2012 by founders Kristin Syltevik and Paul Dobson, who run Oxney as part of a wider organic farming estate. Today Oxney is one of the leading estate producers of organic English wines. Oxney wines are crafted as a showcase for the naturally high-quality grapes grown in the vineyard. In the winery interventions are kept to a minimum to promote full fruit expression.
Vineyard
Planted between 2012 and 2018, Oxney’s 14 hectares of vines are located on a warm, sheltered site six miles from the English Channel and 17 metres above sea level. Vines are planted on a gentle southwest-facing slope, which maximises sun exposure and aids ripening. An adjoining ancient oak forest provides natural wind protection, helping to create excellent conditions for growing high-quality organic grapes. Four varieties are planted – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Seyval Blanc. The soil is Tunbridge Wells sand – a fine sand and silt loam – above clay subsoil.
