The Results Are In!

decanter silver medal

English Wine Week has just wound up and so has Awards season,

The results are in!

Oxney entered two of our wines to the top global wine competitions as well as our local competition run by Wine GB.

We also sent a selection of other wines to some of our favourite wine writers to see how they enjoyed the wines…

How did we do?

2019 CLASSIC SPARKLING £38

Decanter World Wine Awards – SILVER ‘Expressive citrus, orchard fruit aromas, with a rich palate of young fruit, spice and toasty, yeasty characters. This wine has real potential to develop.

Sommelier Wine Awards – SILVER ‘A crisp, chalky and mineral sparkling wine with very fine bubbles that give a lovely texture, and refreshing, bracing acidity that make it very gastronomic – able to balance classic fish dishes, or those with fine cream sauces.’

WineGB – BRONZE

Matthew Jukes – ‘With admirable restraint and control, this is a classy wine with a seriously elegant streak and a bone-dry finish.  While the mid-palate is pliable, the finish is taut, which means it will appeal to serious fizz fans perhaps more than amateurs.’

Tamlyn Currin at JancisRobinson.com 16.5/20

2022 CHARDONNAY STILL £25

Decanter World Wine Awards – BRONZE ‘Creamy, peachy fruits on the nose. Crisp acidity on the palate with good clarity and definition. Stone and orchard fruits, quince, and tart saskatoon berry, with good salinity.

Sommelier Wine Awards – SILVER ‘’Rich and rounded, with a cleanness of green apple. This would be very happy on a by- the-glass programme to showcase a cold climate example of Chardonnay.’

Wine GB – SILVER

Matthew Jukes – In 2020, Matthew Jukes awarded us 20/20 score for this wine (2018 vintage), and writes in his recent Wine Wednesday column for English Wine Week, ‘2022 is a direct descendant of its ground-breaking ancestors, it is the highest praise possible. The hints of drama and excellence are present, and while this is still a youthful creation, it is set for glory’

Tamlyn Currin at JancisRobinson.com also tasted our 2019 Blanc de Blancs and our 2019 Classic Pinot Noir Rosé. Here is what she said about both of these delicious wines with over 36 months sur lie…

OXNEY Pinot Noir 2019, England, 17 points £41

Full bottle 1,651 g. Certified organic (Ecocert, Soil Association). 100%  estate-grown Pinot Noir. Zero dosage.

If you’re lucky enough to have a raspberry bush or two, you’ll know what it’s like to stand there in the late afternoon, pretending to pick raspberries when all you’re really doing is eating them, greedily, one after another. You’ll know that pop of sweetness, tangled into the taste of long summer grass and the odd sharp shock of a raspberry that isn’t quite ripe. Once you’ve tasted this wine, you’ll know what picking raspberries tastes like.

Drink 2024 – 2028

OXNEY Blanc de Blancs 2019, England, 17 points £41

Certified organic (Ecocert, Soil Association). 100%Chardonnay from different parcels throughout Oxney’s vineyard. Each parcel was pressed and fermented separately, and then went through malolactic conversion. Some of the base wines are fermented and aged in older burgundy barrels. 36months sur lattes. Dosage 3.2 g/l. TA7.2 g/l, pH 3.06

Lemon candy, lemon zest on the nose. Shells and chalk and shell dust. Bright and taut and super-mouth-watering – a wine that seems to crack in the mouth like cold lightning, zigzagging apple-green and pear-white and lemon-crunch from the tip of the tongue to the back of the throat. Just SO bright and delicious! Brilliant with food and this will evolve beautifully over the coming years.

Drink 2024 – 2034

We are very happy with these results, however, I think next time, we are going for GOLD!

In good health,

Team of Oxney
