Description

VINTAGE

In 2020 frost hit part of the vineyard mid May but afterwards we had excellent flowering weather and a great summer with very dry weather resulting in super quality grapes.

WINEMAKING

Made from Pinot Noir grapes hand-picked 8th October 2020. The grapes were fermented at ambient temperature in an open vat. Skin contact for 15 days before being pressed and immediately stored in barrels for 12 months. A full malolactic conversion occurred in barrel the following Spring at ambient temperature and the wine was left on full lees.  After elévage it was racked in a stainless steel tank to clarify by gravity. It was bottled un-fined and unfiltered and natural grape deposits might occur.

TASTING NOTE

This red Pinot Noir is the result of the particularly favourable dry weather conditions in 2020 that allowed very high level of ripeness.
Intense ruby colour with a complex nose of ripe flavours ranging from tobacco leaf, dried plums, cherry, walnuts and dark chocolate.
In the mouth it has got a natural sweet entry with a textured palate showing warmth from ripe berries and spicy black peppercorns.
A medium body and long finish makes this wine a great match with charcuterie and barbecue meat. Delicious with dark chocolate.  Best served at about 18ºC or at ambient temperature in winter.

Producer

Six miles north of Rye, in the village of Beckley in the south east corner of East Sussex, Oxney Organic Estate has been producing award-winning organic wines since 2014. The first vines were planted in 2012 by founders Kristin Syltevik and Paul Dobson, who run Oxney as part of a wider organic farming estate. Today Oxney is the largest estate producer of organic English wines. Oxney wines are crafted as a showcase for the naturally high-quality grapes grown in the vineyard. In the winery – a converted Grade II oasthouse – interventions are kept to a minimum to promote full fruit expression.

Vineyard

Planted between 2012 and 2018, Oxney’s 14 hectares of vines are located on a warm, sheltered site six miles from the English Channel and 17 metres above sea level. Vines are planted on a gentle southwest-facing slope, which maximises sun exposure and aids ripening. An adjoining ancient oak forest provides natural wind protection, helping to create excellent conditions for growing high-quality organic grapes. Four varieties are planted – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Seyval Blanc. The soil is Tunbridge Wells sand – a fine sand and silt loam – above clay bedrock.
