Classic Pinot Noir Rosé 2019

We hand-picked early- to mid-October, with the fruit for this 100% Pinot Noir wine coming from our Thompson, Hunt and Dobson blocks. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed, fermented to dryness partly in barrels, then put through malolactic fermentation. In early April 2020 the carefully selected components were blended – and red Pinot Noir was added at this point – and the wine was bottled for the second fermentation.  To preserve the intense fruit and freshness in this wine we decided to disgorge early after just 15 months on lees and with zero dosage.

Fresh and fruity sparkling rosé made from 100% Pinot Noir grown here at the vineyard at Oxney. Delicate hints of red plums and subtle wild strawberry notes on the nose. We kept it fresh and youthful with moderate lees contact for a perfect balance with its fruity character. It’s naturally balanced, honest and moreish on the palate and therefore disgorged with zero dosage (no sugar added).

Rosé 2020

The 2020 growing year had a tough start for us. After a glorious Spring we had severe frost on May 13th and the buds were frosted. But after that we had a typical growing season with a mix of sun and rain through the spring and summer. The frost led to reduced yields.  For the first time we machine harvested the grapes for our still wines. Picking technology has just hit UK shores and we were quick to grab the opportunity as the winery is meters away from the fields. We used Pinot Meunier (70%) and Pinot Noir (30%) to make this wine. The grapes were loaded and left to soak to get the gentle colour which is a hall mark of our still rosé. Low intervention winemaking is at the core of what we do and this wine has not been filtered or fined.

Still rosé wine made from 70% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir grown in the fields surrounding the winery. Pale and elegant with wild strawberry and redcurrant notes from our terroir. This is rosé for grownups, crafted to express the full purity of the grapes it originates from. It’s an invitingly pale pink, with tangy aromas of lemons, cranberries, rhubarb and raspberries. In the mouth it’s utterly refreshing, with bright red fruits and citrus lingering on the crisp finish. Makes friends with all kinds of foods.

Estate NV Rosé

All grapes are picked by hand and transported to our winery next to the vineyard. Each parcel is whole bunch pressed and fermented separately with all the wines also going through malolactic fermentation (MLF). The Estate blend is a blend of different parcels across the estate, combined with reserve wines aged in both tank and Burgundy barrels to create a consistent NV style. After blending the Estate is bottled for secondary fermentation, after which it is aged on lees, and finally spent three months on cork prior to release. The dosage added is 9g/l.

Beautiful pale rosé, with delicate flavours of wild strawberry, redcurrant and red apple. Enjoy as an aperitif or with shellfish, fish or chicken dishes.

VINTAGE INFORMATION:  Grape varieties: Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay – Alcohol (ABV): 11% – Dosage: 9.5g/l – TA: 8g/l – pH: 3.0 – SO2 total: 48mg/l – Closure: Diam cork

Producer

The vineyard at Oxney Organic Estate is located in the south east corner of East Sussex, in Beckley, six miles north of Rye. The area is becoming a new wine region with several vineyards planted along the old Rother river delta. The vineyard is part of the founders’ – Kristin Syltevik and Paul Dobson – vision of modern farming that’s environmentally sound, natural and sustainable. The estate is organic and certified by the Soil Association. The winery is located in an old converted grade II listed oast house.

The organic system at Oxney – under vine tillage for weed control and a natural approach to disease control – produces healthy, balanced and natural fruit. This approach is replicated in the winery where the organic low intervention regime is focused around small batch winemaking where each variety and clone is pressed and fermented separately, followed by careful blending decisions.

Vineyard

The first vines were planted in 2012. With the latest planting in May 2018, Oxney is the largest single estate organic vineyard in the UK with a planted area of just under 14 hectares. The vineyard, 17 meters above sea level and six miles from the English Channel, surrounds the winery and from a south-west slope stretches out towards a wood with giant oak trees, creating a warm and protected microclimate. The top soil is Tunbridge Wells Sand, a fine sand and silt loam, above clay. The vines are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc.
